Playas del Coco might be Costa Rica’s most convenient town for a beach getaway. Located about 30 minutes from the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste. Playas del Coco has everything to provide an easy and comfortable vacation. Hotels, restaurants, banks, supermarkets, sun, sand and sea make this a great homebase. But what about the other local beaches for a day trip? Last month we spoke about Playa Ocotal, this time we explore Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama, Playas del Coco’s popular beach neighbors.
Playas del Coco to Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama
Playa Hermosa is just a 15 minute drive from downtown Playas del Coco. After heading out of town on Coco’s main boulevard turn left at the intersection atop the hill. Follow this curvy road for about 5 minutes and you will descend into Playa Hermosa, a small community with a great beach. Once you pass the first speed bump the following left is the first beach entrance. There is not that much to do at this entrance, but you have arrived at a beautiful beach so you will still be happy. The second beach entrance is by far the most popular, turn left on the road with the large high rise apartments and follow it right to the beach. Parking here is considered secure and it is recommended you tip the guy who watches the cars a buck or two.
If you continued on the main road instead of turning you will arrive at Playa Panama, just another 5 minutes up the road. Playa Panama also has two beach entrances. The first being straight ahead, the second down the road further than making a left. The second entrance is very popular as there is lots of green grass to lay down a blanket for an afternoon picnic at the beach.
Things to do in Playa Hermosa
Playa Hermosa translates to beautiful beach in spanish. The name is no lie, this light tan colored sand beach is a great place to spend a day.
Snorkeling is best on the rocks on the right hand side. If you are feeling adventurous there is a small rock island formation that rises out of the the water of that side. It is further than it looks but worth the trip. Many passing rays, fish and even turtles can be seen here. This trip is only recommended for experienced and strong swimmers. If you are more into relax mode get a drink and a bite to eat at one of Playa Hermosa’s beachfront restaurants. Seafood, american style, you name it you can find it on Playa Hermosas beautiful waterfront restaurant row!
If the weather is not in your favor you can also check out Playa Hermosa’s new cinema style movie theatre located in Hermosa Heights.
Playa Panama is located just at the mouth of the Bahia Culebra bay which makes this beach’s water consistently more calm than other area beached. The protection from the bay is provided by the Peninsula Papagayo that you see directly in front of the beach and at the tip the famous Monkey Head rock formation.
As stated above Playa Panama is a great place for a picnic with the family or a romantic afternoon with your significant other. The grass makes for a great afternoon with cool shade from the trees. The calm waters here are a favorite amongst families bringing their children for the obvious safety benefit of weaker currents.
All in all this area has it all. Convenience, fine dining and adventure. There are also many other lesser known beaches we will be sharing with you in the future so stay tuned to our blog and follow us on Facebook.
